  • Types of Thermal Underwear

Posted on September 9, 2014 by olinselot

Maybe you're an avid extreme winter mountain trekker or you simply get the chills while working in the cool office, you operate heavy mining equipment year round or you work for the US Coast Guard. Either way, thermal long underwear, also known as base layer or long johns, may be just what you need to stay warm and comfortable. The type you choose will depend on your activity level, your budget, and the temperature.

There are many types of thermal underwear but our customers usually choose one of these top three.

    Merino Wool

Merino Wool thermal underwear is our warmest underwear. It doesn't itch or smell like regular wool can. It is very soft and comfortable against your skin. It wicks moisture away from your skin when you get wet. It also maintains its thermal properties, keeping you warm, even when it is wet. Best of all, it is made from natural materials that are environmentally sustainable. Merino sheep need a haircut once in a while just like you do - no harm done.

    Polypropylene

Polypropylene is a popular material for thermal underwear because of its affordability. It is less expensive than many other options, but has many of the same benefits. Polypropylene will stay warm when it gets wet. It is durable and will last a long time. It dries very fast compared to other materials and it also wicks moisture away from the skin.

    100% Cotton

    100% cotton thermal underwear

100% Cotton thermal underwear and long johns are hands down some of the most comfortable, warm underwear you can get. It is very affordable, comes in a variety of colors and styles, and is made from renewable and natural fibers. The comfort and feel of cotton is hard to beat.

  • Long Underwear Under Your Halloween Costume

Long Underwear - Pick A Color That Matches Your Costume

Long underwear can save your Halloween night if your costume isn't warm enough for the weather conditions you'll face. If you've put a lot of time into choosing or creating the right costume, you don't want your long thermal underwear to clash with it. Luckily, the most common of colors for thermal underwear are white and black. There are plenty of other colors to choose from as well. But, you shouldn't have a problem picking out one that will match your Halloween costume just right.

Long Underwear - Check The Forecast And Wear The Right Weight

Long Underwear will keep you warm this Halloween Wear long underwear under your costume if it is this cold

Temperatures and weather conditions can vary throughout the country each October. Some years long underwear isn't even necessary. Here in Utah I've seen some Halloween's warm enough to run around trick-or-treating in shorts. Other years it's so cold that you can't even chew the candy from your bag. Here are some tips on picking long thermal underwear that is the right weight for the temperatures.

The first thing to keep in mind is that the more air your clothing is able to trap next to your skin, the better you will be insulated and the warmer you'll stay. The costume you wear can either help or hinder your ability to stay warm. Check the weather forecast to see what conditions will likely be. Will it be cold and windy? Is there snow in the forecast? Is it supposed to be below freezing without any wind? All of these factors can help you choose what long underwear will do the job and keep you the warmest. If it is windy and your costume is very breathable then you'll want to wear heavy weight long underwear. Wind can really steal away the heat if is is able to blow through your costume. If it is only mildly cold without any wind, you can get away with lightweight long underwear. If conditions are in between, then go with a mid weight thermal.

Long Underwear - Some Long Underwear Performs Better In Snow

If the forecast calls for snow, you'll want to be prepared with the right long underwear. In damp conditions, some long underwear fabrics perform better than others. Synthetic fabrics like polyester or polypropylene are excellent at keeping your skin dry and retaining heat even when they get wet. If you prefer something natural, then you'll want something that is either 100% merino wool or at least a high merino wool content. Merino wool is a soft non itchy wool that wicks moisture away from your skin and also retains your body heat when wet.

One material you'll want to make sure you stay away from in the snow is cotton. Cotton absorbs moisture really well. Once wet, cotton long underwear looses its ability to retain heat. You quickly go from feeling warm and cozy to wet and freezing. Follow these guidelines this Halloween and you're guaranteed to have a fun, warm trick-or-treating experience!
